A traditional sauna is a heated room. An element warms a pile of stones, the stones warm the air, and you sit in 80°C to 100°C. Throwing water on the stones flashes it to steam, which is löyly, and it is the part infrared cannot reproduce. Sessions run in short rounds of 10 to 20 minutes with a cool-down between them.
Infrared skips the air entirely. Panels emit radiation your skin absorbs directly, so you warm up while the room stays at a temperature you could hold a conversation in. That is why an infrared session runs 30 to 45 minutes, why it plugs into a normal socket, and why it costs roughly a quarter as much to run.
The list price is the start of the number, not the end of it. These are the additions that turn a £4,999 cabin into a £7,000 project, and every one of them is predictable before you order.

Running cost is where the two heat types separate hardest. A 6kW traditional session costs about £1.57 and a 1600W infrared session about 42p, so a household using a sauna three times a week pays about £245 a year against £66. You can assemble a kit yourself, and self-build shells are the cheapest route into a real sauna. The electrical connection is different. Every traditional heater hard-wires to a dedicated 16A to 32A circuit run from the consumer unit, and that circuit has to be installed and certified by an electrician registered with a competent person scheme.
What you should receive at the end is an Electrical Installation Certificate and a Building Regulations compliance notice. Keep both: they are what a home insurer and a buyer's solicitor ask for, and reproducing them years later means paying for a fresh inspection. Infrared cabins and blankets sidestep the whole requirement by running off a standard 13A socket.
Outdoors adds a base and a cable run. A 3-5 person cabin weighs about 600kg empty, so it needs a concrete slab, paving on a proper sub-base or a reinforced deck, laid and cured before delivery day. The power usually arrives as armoured cable in a trench, and digging that trench yourself is the single biggest saving available on the job.
The evidence people cite for sauna use comes overwhelmingly from Finland, where a2015 cohort study published in JAMA Internal Medicinefollowed 2,315 middle-aged men for over 20 years and found frequent sauna bathing associated with lower cardiovascular mortality.
Two caveats are worth stating plainly. That is an association in an observational study rather than a controlled trial, and it studied hot traditional saunas used several times a week, so it does not transfer automatically to a 60°C infrared cabin. Buy either type because you want the heat, and treat the literature as a reason to be unworried rather than a reason to buy.
